Frequently asked questions

Is a password manager really safe? All my passwords are in one place.

Yes, if it uses end-to-end encryption. Your vault is then encrypted on your device with your master password, and the provider cannot read it. Even if its servers are hacked, attackers only get encrypted data. The risk of using the same or a weak password everywhere is much greater.

Isn’t the password manager in my browser enough?

It is better than nothing for getting started. Standalone password managers, however, work in every browser and on every device, offer secure sharing, emergency access and stronger encryption. When you switch browsers or phones, you simply take your passwords with you.

What happens if I forget my master password?

With true end-to-end encryption, the provider cannot reset it. That is why most offer a recovery key to print out or emergency access via a trusted person. Set this up right at the start.

Can I move my passwords to another provider later?

Yes. All password managers in this comparison can export passwords and import them from other programs. Switching usually takes only a few minutes.

Where do the euro prices come from?

We list the euro prices the providers charge in Austria and Germany, usually promotional prices for new customers. Where we could not yet confirm the euro price, we convert the provider’s dollar price and mark it with “approx.”. Bitwarden bills in US dollars only, so its dollar price is shown. Depending on your country, VAT may be added. You will see the exact price at the provider before you buy.

How we compare

We compare based on facts that can be verified: prices and features according to the provider’s website, headquarters, published source code, published security audits and known security incidents.

We have not tested every password manager ourselves in everyday use over a longer period. Where we have no reliable information, the table says “n/a”.

Prices change frequently, and many providers advertise introductory prices for the first year. The price on the provider’s website always applies.

We list prices in euros. If we could not yet confirm a provider’s euro price, we convert its dollar price at the ECB reference rate of 27 October 2026 and mark it with “approx.”.

We may earn a commission for links marked “Ad”. This affects neither the information in the table nor the order of the criteria. Providers without an affiliate programme are also included and recommended where they fit best.
