What the website checker tests
We request the address the way a browser would and follow up to five redirects. You then see the HTTP status code of the final page, the response time from our server and whether the connection is encrypted.
The most important status codes
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
200 | All good. The page was delivered. |
301, 308 | Permanent redirect, for example from http to https. |
302, 307 | Temporary redirect. |
403 | Access denied. A firewall often blocks automated requests. |
404 | The page does not exist at this address. |
500 | Internal server error, often after a broken update. |
502, 503, 504 | The server is overloaded, under maintenance or an upstream service is not responding. |
The site doesn’t load for me, but the check says it’s up
Then the problem is usually on your side: browser cache, a local DNS entry, your company network or a VPN. Try the site in a private window or over mobile data. Conversely, a firewall may block our checking server even though the site works for visitors. You can tell by the status code 403.
How fast is fast enough?
The measured time is the time to first byte, including connection setup. Under 500 milliseconds is very good, up to about 1.5 seconds is fine. Visitors and search engines notice anything slower. Common causes are cheap shared hosting, missing caching or too many plugins.
Frequently asked questions: Website Checker
How do I check whether a website is down or just not loading for me?
Enter the address into the website checker. We fetch the page from our server in Germany, independent of your own internet connection. If it loads for us, the problem is usually your device, browser cache or network.
What do the HTTP status codes 200, 403, 404 and 500 mean?
200 means the page was delivered normally. 403 means access is denied, often by a firewall. 404 means the page does not exist at this address. 500 and above are server errors, for example after a broken update.
How fast should a website respond?
Under 500 milliseconds to the first response is very good, up to about 1.5 seconds is fine. Visitors and search engines notice anything slower. Common causes are slow hosting, missing caching or too many plugins.
Is the website checker free?
Yes, all Cloudwächter tools are free and work without an account. We store neither the addresses you check nor the results.
